How to reduce the grade bias in student evaluation systems? A natural experiment

The aim of the study is to examine how the relationship between grades and scores from students evaluation of teaching changed after the reform in the student evaluation system. The most significant change brought about by the reform was that the completion of student evaluation questionnaires was moved from the second half of the semester to the end of the exam period, and as a result, students already knew their grades at the time of filling them out. Based on panel regression results, grading bias increased significantly, more than twofold after the reform, primarily in courses characterized by low average grades. This increases the risk of grade inflation in the long run, therefore, based on the research results, it is worth designing student evaluation systems in such a way that students do not yet know their final grade at the time of their evaluation response.
